Kidney Scandal: Ekweremadu’s wife back in Nigeria after release from UK prison

Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, is back in Nigeria, after securing freedom from prison in the United Kingdom.

According to The PUNCH, a source disclosed that the lawmaker’s wife returned on Tuesday, and is presently in Abuja.

The couple had illegally purchased a kidney by flying a young street trader from Nigeria to the UK, with the intention of using him as a donor for a doctor to help do a transplant to replace the failed kidney of their daughter, Sonia.

After they were caught, a court in the UK, in May 2023, sentenced 60-year-old Ekweremadu, to nine years and eight months in prison, his 56-year-old wife, six years in prison, and the doctor, Obinna Obeta, 10 years in prison, for their involvement in organ harvesting.

Their crime, according to the court, violated UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015, which is the first conviction under the act in the country since its enactment.
