NNPC, TotalEnergies & Partners Donate Solar-Powered Borehole Laboratory In Enugu

Federal Government College Enugu in Enugu State has received a solar-powered borehole and water treatment facility thanks to the efforts of NNPC Limited, TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, operator of OML 130, and partners as part of their corporate social responsibilities to various communities in Nigeria.

Due to the lack of a public water supply and the intricate soil formation in Enugu, a severe water deficit is predicted to be alleviated by the solar-powered borehole and treatment facility.

The school community will have easy access to drinkable water from the borehole, which is powered by solar panels and a 10 kVA inverter, lowering the risk of waterborne illnesses.

The borehole is fully outfitted with 4 units of 10,000-liter G-PEE tanks and 8 distribution points that can supply the neighborhood and the school with enough water.

The project is a part of efforts to close a number of gaps that have been discovered, according to Mr. Bala Wunti, the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of the NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, who was represented by Mrs. Joy Eguahon.

The partners would continue to promote the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he said, noting that the initiatives were in line with them.

Mr. Mike Sangster, the Managing Director of TotalEnergies Upstream, expressed his happiness at the successful completion and commissioning of the water supply project that would make publicly treated water available to the beneficiary community. He was represented by Mrs. Kenechi Esomeju, General Manager, CSR, TotalEnergies EP Nigeria.

He said that the non-chemical containerized treatment plant for the water borehole project will produce 40,000 liters of water per day.

“The water treatment plant installation is a non-chemical containerized treatment plant. It has a capacity of delivering 40,000 litres of treated water per day which it sends to four 10,000 G-Pee tanks with eight dispensing points.

“In the 1st Phase, a total of 33 projects were launched in 2017 in the areas of education, health, capacity building and access to water across the country. In the 2nd Phase another 24 projects were launched in 2018 and yet another 27 projects were launched in 2019 in our 3rd Phase.

“Of the 84 infrastructure projects, 54 have already been completed and commissioned from the earlier three phases and 8 have now been completed and are currently being commissioned this November,” the director said.

The Federal Government College Enugu’s principal thanked TotalEnergies Upstream, NNPC Limited, and its collaborators for making the borehole project a reality.

“Thank you very much for this laudable project which you have executed to alleviate the water problems we face. TotalEnergies and NNPC have made this project come to actualization. And I request that they help connect a water link to the school kitchen, toilets, and hostels for easy access by the students,” he remarked.
