TCN attributes grid failures to GENCOs and DISCOs

The primary cause of the ongoing national grid failures, according to the energy transmission company of Nigeria, TCN, is a lack of capacity in the electricity generation companies, or GENCOs, and distribution companies, or DISCOs.

About seven times this year, the nation’s electrical grid has failed, with the most recent failure being on September 26.

In light of this, Mr. Nsima Ekere, the chairman of the Technical and Monitoring Committee of the TCN governing board, announced that TCN was in the process of installing a supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA, system that would address the inconsistent conditions that could cause grid collapse.

Ekere revealed this during the TCN committee board members’ examination of the company’s warehouse and a few important substations in Lagos.

He asserts that “Grid collapse and network dependability is not TCN’s fault but primarily from the GENCOs and DISCOs as they use more and occasionally less electricity, which ultimately has a detrimental impact on the national grid.

He said, “TCN is currently installing a supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA, system, and once this is fully operational, it will help significantly with dependability and minimize grid collapses.”

The general manager of TCN’s Lagos West Substation, Mr. Mojeed Akintola, stated during a visit to the Ayobo facility that the substation had a 1,050 MW wheeling capacity and that it would supply three distribution companies, namely Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, and some portions of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
