NMDPRA Promises Sustainable Gas Usage in Nigeria

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced that it will making sure that natural gas exploitation and usage in Nigeria increase sustainably.
Its Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, stated on Tuesday in Lagos that it was critical that businesses and families start using gas as an alternative fossil fuel.
Ahmed reportedly delivered the advice at a one-day stakeholders engagement on “Gas Utilisation in Nigeria,” according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ahmed, who was represented by Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director of NMDPRA’s Distribution, System, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure, urged Nigerians to switch in large numbers to using petrol for their everyday energy requirements instead of diesel and petrol.
He said that doing so would lessen the country’s carbon footprint and address both climate change and global warming.

The goal of the engagement, according to Ahmed, is to raise awareness among major users of petroleum products of the relative benefits of various fuels, notably petrol, which he claimed has been designated as Nigeria’s transition fuel.
He stated that the Federal Government has several programmes and policy frameworks, such as the National Gas Expansion Programme and the Decade of Gas Programme, to encourage the use of gas and investment.
He said that the industry has been made more investment-friendly by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA)2021.
Ahmed expressed his happiness that the government’s efforts were having a noticeable impact but stressed that additional partnerships were necessary to increase domestic petrol usage.
The head of the NMDPRA reaffirmed that Nigeria is endowed with an abundance of gas reserves, enough to sustain the country for the ensuing 90 years.
He said that efficient petrol usage would increase national wealth and protect the environment since petrol is significantly cleaner than other petroleum derivatives.
He said that the potential to save operating costs by 40% was another significant advantage of using petrol.
Ahmed urged people who use a lot of energy to switch from diesel to petrol engines because “it is more affordable.”
He also informed customers of the importance of having a valid licence due to the many advantages that come with it.
He mentioned some of them, such as making sure that facilities are secure and that the authority consistently supplies the goods.
Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director, Distribution, System, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure of NMDPRA, said the exercise was designed to take advantage of the changing commercial growth potential in the gas value chain.
He said that by passing the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), Nigeria will be able to get more value out of its natural gas.
He claims that Nigeria is launching several programmes, initiatives, and policies to improve the performance of the oil and gas industry.
