NOA warns Nigerians against disrespecting flag, other national symbols

In celebration of National Ordinance Day, the National Orientation Agency, NOA, has urged Nigerians to honor and respect the country’s national symbols.
The call was made by the agency’s Kaduna State Director, Hamisu Mayere, in a statement released on Wednesday.
He highlighted that national symbols such as the Nigerian flag, currency, coat of arms, national anthem, and constitution represent the nation’s identity and should be treated with reverence.
The agency also joined the rest of the nation in commemorating National Ordinance Day, which has been observed annually on September 16 since 2012.
The event marks the historic day when the symbols of Nigeria’s sovereignty were formally handed over by the colonial authorities to the indigenous government.
NOA emphasized that any act of defacing or distorting these symbols is considered a violation of the law, as outlined in the Nigerian constitution.
The agency further encouraged citizens to embody the core national values of patriotism, religious tolerance, discipline, self-reliance, dignity of labor, integrity, honesty, and social justice, which are essential for fostering peace and progress in the country.

Recall NOA had again highlighted the proliferation of fake news and hate speech as significant obstacles to peace and progress in the country.
The agency expressed concern that many news consumers fail to verify information before accepting or sharing it, which can lead to the spread of misinformation and fuel tensions at the grassroots and societal levels.
