Two new contracts has been announced by Transocean for its ultra deepwater drillship Deepwater Asgard in the US Gulf of Mexico.

The contracts which will last for 14 months of work and $181 million in additional firm backlog.

The first contract is worth $395,000 per day with Murphy Oil. It is expected to begin late this autumn after the rig comes back from its current contract and a planned out-of-service period. The backlog on the firm contract is about $20 million.

This contract includes an option for a second well at the same rate.

The second award is a one-year contract with an undisclosed operator at $440,000 per day, plus up to $40,000 per day for additional services. It is expected to begin in the first half of 2023.

This contract includes three one-year options. The firm backlog for this contract is about $161 million, not including any revenue from additional products and services associated with the contract.

Transocean has several drillships operating in the US Gulf of Mexico, at least four of which are working for Shell’s deepwater drilling operations. Shell has contracts with these drillships for several more years.

Another drillship, the Deepwater Conqueror, was recently awarded a two-year contract in the Gulf of Mexico for $321 million.
