North Field Expansion Project: Qatar Petroleum Awards Contract

North Field Expansion Project: Qatar Petroleum Awards Contract. Arising status reports say Qatar Petroleum tapped Spanish-based general contractor Técnicas Reunidas S.A. to handle core engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) efforts for its North Field Expansion (NFE) project.

Definitions in this new contract have the Spanish EPC player Técnicas Reunidas play the EPC contractor for expansion activities which will cover existing liquid products storage and loading facilities, and as well as expansion of import facilities surrounding Mono-Ethylene Glycol, within the Industrial City of Ras Laffan.

Qatar Petroleum says the EPC expert will also undertake the ancillary facilities and pipelines serving the North Field Expansion project.The contract expects Técnicas Reunidas to deliver engineering work in Qatar as part of the project. The monetary value of the new deal was not disclosed however, the nature of the contract points to a huge deal.The new facilities are expected to handle liquid products from the NFE’s four new LNG trains scheduled to kickoff before the last quarter of 2025.

The facilities are expected to also give capacity to two other LNG trains, including the North Field South (NFS) project, the Qatar Petroleum revealed. The NFE project is expected to shoot up Qatar’s LNG production capacity from its current 77 million tons per annum (Mtpa) to 110 million tons per annum (Mtpa) and the NFS project will further elevate this number to 126 Mtpa, according to the company.

According to President of Qatar Petroleum, Saad Sherida in a company statement, “The award of this major EPC contract is a part of the North Field Expansion project, which supports the further development of Qatar’s substantial natural gas resources and reinforces our position as the world’s largest LNG producer, ”The contract is expected to support the expansion of the existing infrastructure integral to the safe loading and on-time delivery of associated liquid products to Qatar Petroleum’s international customer base.

In this same vein, Spanish contractor Técnicas Reunidas is to deliver this significant project successfully.“The NFE project, with a capacity of 32 Mtpa, is the largest LNG project ever to be undertaken. We are grateful to the wise leadership and directives of His Highness The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, which place the greatest emphasis on the successful management and development of our natural resources in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, while maintaining Qatar’s strong global leadership in the LNG industry,” Al-Kaabi went on to say.

The North Gas Field (NGF) discovered in the 70s holds total recoverable gas of more than 900 trillion standard cubic feet and is considered to be the largest single non-associated gas reservoir in the world, the Qatar Petroleum’s website indicates.Qatar Petroleum has described its corporate existence as one as one towing the path of an integrated national oil corporation tasked with the sustainable development of the oil and gas industry in the State of Qatar and beyond.

Complementing is Técnicas Reunidas, which is a generator EPC contractor located in Madrid, Spain. Tecnicas Reunidas is one of the world’s leading engineering and construction companies providing sustainable solutions, according to its website. In May 2021 alone, the company disclosed that it had bagged a $240 million with Gazprom Neft for the development of a modern facility for treating residual oil at Moscow Refinery. Same month, it admitted that it had secured a $1.05 billion (EUR 900 million) in a Poland-based petrochemical complex expansion project with PKN ORLEN.
